The program started with the lamp lighting ceremony which was undertaken by the Principal of DPS Varanasi Mr. Pradeep Ghosh. This event featured Chhou dance performed by SITALPUR GANESH DANCE PARTY of Purulia district of West Bengal.
Chhou is one of the rare mask dances of eastern India. There
are three forms of Chhou named according to the districts to which they belong. Chhou basically depicts the mythological stories from Mahabharata and Ramayana and preach the victory of good over
evil.
Today DPS Varanasi enjoyed the famous century old style of Purulia Chhou. where the performers presented the destruction of
Mahishasur by goddess Durga.
This beautiful depiction featured Ganesha, Kartikeya, Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesha and lion of goddess Durga. It was a scintillating performance by the dance troupe and the students were overwhelmed.
At the end the Principal sir presented the memento to the head of the dance troupe and told the students that this style of
dancing has so much of vigour in it because originally the hunters were the actual performers of this dance form.
